When Is the Lunar New Year Break in 2026?

The Year of the Horse starts on Tuesday 17 February 2026. The official shutdown runs from Sunday 15 February (New Year's Eve) through Thursday 19 February. Friday 20 February is a substitute closure day.

What shuts: - Most private firms: 3-7 days - Banks and government counters: the full stretch - Schools: at least the full week (15-20 February)

What runs: - Convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart): 24/7, no change - Night markets: many open on shorter hours; check /taipei-night-market-hours - Some department stores and supermarkets: open, reduced hours

Need a bank or government counter? Work around 15-20 February. Nothing official opens.

Why Does Taiwan Get a Long Weekend for 228?

Peace Memorial Day lands on Saturday 28 February 2026. The substitute day is Friday 27 February, so offices that close get a three-day stretch (27 February to 1 March, weekend included).

The date marks the February 28 Incident of 1947. Government counters shut. Private-sector practice splits: many offices give staff the Friday, but shops and restaurants usually run as normal.

What Dates Are the April Tomb-Sweeping Long Weekend?

Tomb-Sweeping Day is Sunday 5 April 2026. The substitute closure is Monday 6 April. Children's Day (4 April) gets its substitute day on Friday 3 April. The result: a four-day break from 3-6 April.

Traffic jams hit cemeteries and highways out of the cities. Public transport is packed and runs a reduced timetable. Temples and columbaria stretch their hours.

When Is the Dragon Boat Festival in 2026?

The Dragon Boat Festival lands on Friday 19 June 2026. Most workplaces shut for the day. Banks and government counters close. Traditional markets sell zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) in the weeks before.

Does the Mid-Autumn Break Create a Long Weekend?

Mid-Autumn is Friday 25 September 2026. Confucius' Birthday follows on Monday 28 September. That gives a four-day break from 25-28 September.

Mooncakes hit the shops from early September. Parks and riversides fill with families picnicking and watching the full moon.

What Happens on Double Tenth in 2026?

National Day (雙十節, Double Tenth) is Saturday 10 October 2026. The substitute day is Friday 9 October, creating a three-day break.

Taipei runs parades, illuminates government buildings, and holds flag-raising ceremonies. Banks and government counters close both 9 and 10 October. Private firms typically shut on the Friday.

How Closures Hit Services and Shops

Banks: Shut on every public closure day. ATMs keep running. International banks may add an extra day around the Lunar New Year.

Government counters: Shut on every public closure day. No passport, visa, or permit processing.

Post offices: Shut on public closure days. Parcel delivery slips by a day.

Private offices: Most close for the Lunar New Year (3-7 days), National Day, and Labor Day. Smaller firms often shut for Peace Memorial Day and Tomb-Sweeping Day.

Shops and restaurants: Most department stores and restaurants stay open on all closure days except the Lunar New Year, when many close for 2-3 days.

Convenience stores: Open around the clock, every day. No exceptions.

Night markets: Open on all closure days except Lunar New Year's Eve and Day. Some stallholders take extra days around that period.

Public transport: Runs a weekend timetable. Trains and intercity buses add capacity for Tomb-Sweeping Day, the Dragon Boat Festival, and the Mid-Autumn break.

Why Do the Dates Move Every Year?

Traditional commemorations track the lunar calendar. The Lunar New Year falls on the second new moon after the December solstice. Tomb-Sweeping Day is fixed to the solar term Qingming, around 4-5 April. The Dragon Boat Festival is the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Mid-Autumn is the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month.

Official dates use the Gregorian calendar: business contracts, government operations, school terms, and fixed commemorations like Founding Day (1 January) and National Day (10 October).

Taiwan does not run daylight saving time. The clock stays at UTC+8 all year. For more, see /daylight-saving-time-in-taipei.

What Stays Open No Matter What?

The short answer: convenience stores, most night markets, and many restaurants. The detail:

  • 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, OK便利店: 24/7, every day. Food, drinks, toiletries, basic medicines.
  • Night markets: Open except Lunar New Year's Eve and Day. Hours may shorten. Check /taipei-night-market-hours.
  • Supermarkets (Carrefour, Wellcome, City Super): Open every day including the Lunar New Year, often shorter hours on the day itself.
  • Department stores: Open on most closure days. Shut on Lunar New Year's Day. Some add an extra day.
  • Pharmacies: Rotating schedules. Many stay open.
  • Restaurants: Most stay open. Small family-run spots may close for 3-5 days around the Lunar New Year.
  • Museums and tourist sites: Open on most closure days. Shut on Lunar New Year's Eve and Day. The National Palace Museum opens every day except Lunar New Year's Eve.

Planning Travel Around Taiwan's Closures

Book transport early. Trains for Tomb-Sweeping Day (3-6 April) and Mid-Autumn (25-28 September) sell out weeks ahead. Taiwan High Speed Rail adds carriages but not enough to meet demand.

Skip business meetings during the Lunar New Year week (15-20 February). Your counterpart will not be in the office.
