Understanding the time difference: Taipei vs US

Taiwan Standard Time (CST) sits at UTC+8 and stays there all year. The United States shifts its clocks twice a year. Taiwan does not. That means the time difference between Taipei and any US city changes by one hour in spring and another hour in fall, even though Taipei never moves.

In the months when the US is on standard time, the gap is larger. When the US switches to daylight time, the gap shrinks by one hour. You need two sets of numbers: one for the period from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November, and another for the rest of the year.

The city-by-city sections below give the exact offsets for January (standard time) and July (daylight time), which represent the two extremes.

Taipei to US East Coast (New York): 12-13 hours behind

The rule: New York is 13 hours behind Taipei in standard time, 12 hours behind in daylight time.

On 15 January 2026, when it is 8:00 in Taipei, it is 19:00 (7:00 PM) in New York on the previous day. On 15 July 2026, when it is 8:00 in Taipei, it is 20:00 (8:00 PM) in New York on the previous day.

This is the most common pairing for US-East-Coast callers. The window that works for both sides is narrow, but predictable.

Book the Taipei morning window (8:00-10:00). It lands in the US East Coast previous evening. - Standard time (Jan): New York 19:00-22:00 (7:00 PM, 10:00 PM) the night before - Daylight time (Jul): New York 20:00-23:00 (8:00 PM, 11:00 PM) the night before

Use this as your first choice. The person in Taipei is fresh at their desk. The person in New York is still awake after dinner. Skip it only if the New Yorker goes to bed before 22:00.

Use the Taipei evening window (20:00-22:00) as a fallback. It lands in the US East Coast morning. - Standard time (Jan): New York 7:00-10:00 (7:00 AM, 10:00 AM) the same day - Daylight time (Jul): New York 8:00-11:00 (8:00 AM, 11:00 AM) the same day

Pick this when the Taipei caller cannot make a morning call. The Taipei person works late. The New Yorker starts their day. The risk: the New Yorker is in a meeting or commuting during the first hour.

Taipei to US West Coast (Los Angeles): 15-16 hours behind

The rule: Los Angeles is 16 hours behind Taipei in standard time, 15 hours behind in daylight time.

On 15 January 2026, when it is 8:00 in Taipei, it is 16:00 (4:00 PM) in Los Angeles on the previous day. On 15 July 2026, when it is 8:00 in Taipei, it is 17:00 (5:00 PM) in Los Angeles on the previous day.

The West Coast gap is three hours larger than the East Coast gap. That pushes the best Taipei morning window into the US late afternoon, which is easier for most people.

Book the Taipei morning window (8:00-10:00). It lands on the US West Coast previous afternoon. - Standard time (Jan): Los Angeles 16:00-18:00 (4:00 PM, 6:00 PM) the day before - Daylight time (Jul): Los Angeles 17:00-19:00 (5:00 PM, 7:00 PM) the day before

This window works because the Los Angeles person is still at their desk or just leaving. It fails if the LA person has a hard stop at 17:00.

Use the Taipei late-evening window (21:00-23:00) as a fallback. It lands on the US West Coast morning. - Standard time (Jan): Los Angeles 6:00-8:00 (6:00 AM, 8:00 AM) the same day - Daylight time (Jul): Los Angeles 7:00-9:00 (7:00 AM, 9:00 AM) the same day

This is painful for the Taipei caller: a 21:00 or 22:00 call. It is the only way to catch the LA person before their workday gets busy. Tech industry engineers in Taipei often take these late calls with US teams.

Taipei to US Central Time (Chicago): 13-14 hours behind

The rule: Chicago is 14 hours behind Taipei in standard time, 13 hours behind in daylight time.

On 15 January 2026, when it is 8:00 in Taipei, it is 18:00 (6:00 PM) in Chicago on the previous day. On 15 July 2026, when it is 8:00 in Taipei, it is 19:00 (7:00 PM) in Chicago on the previous day.

Chicago sits between New York and Los Angeles in offset. The advice follows the same pattern, shifted by one hour relative to New York.

Book the Taipei morning window (8:00-10:00). It lands in Chicago the previous evening. - Standard time (Jan): Chicago 18:00-20:00 (6:00 PM, 8:00 PM) - Daylight time (Jul): Chicago 19:00-21:00 (7:00 PM, 9:00 PM)

Use the Taipei evening window (20:00-22:00) as a fallback. It lands in Chicago in the morning. - Standard time (Jan): Chicago 6:00-8:00 (6:00 AM, 8:00 AM) - Daylight time (Jul): Chicago 7:00-9:00 (7:00 AM, 9:00 AM)

Weekend calls and social scheduling

Business calls follow the windows above. Social calls can be looser. If you are calling a friend or family member in Taipei on a weekend, book the morning window (8:00-10:00 Taipei). You can stretch it to 11:00 Taipei time without bothering anyone.

Never call Taipei between 23:00 and 7:00 local time. That is the middle of the night, even on weekends. Taipei night markets run until midnight, but people sleep after that.

Business meeting scheduling: overlapping hours

For a recurring meeting between Taipei and any US office, lock in the Taipei morning window. It is the only reliable overlap during the US workday. The Taipei evening window forces the US person to call before their workday starts. Some teams accept this. Many do not.

The single hour that works for everyone in the continental US is Taipei 8:00-9:00. In standard time, that is 19:00-20:00 New York, 18:00-19:00 Chicago, and 16:00-17:00 Los Angeles. In daylight time, it is 20:00-21:00 New York, 19:00-20:00 Chicago, and 17:00-18:00 Los Angeles.

DST complications: US clocks change, Taipei doesn't

The United States shifts to daylight saving time on the second Sunday of March at 2:00 AM local time. Clocks spring forward one hour. The United States shifts back to standard time on the first Sunday of November at 2:00 AM local time. Clocks fall back one hour.

Taipei does nothing. No spring forward, no fall back. Taiwan abandoned DST permanently by the early 1980s.

This means the time difference between Taipei and New York changes twice a year: - From the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November: Taipei is 12 hours ahead of New York. - From the first Sunday of November to the second Sunday of March: Taipei is 13 hours ahead of New York.

The same pattern applies to Los Angeles (15 vs 16 hours) and Chicago (13 vs 14 hours).

If you schedule a call in February and keep the same time through April, you will be one hour off. Check the current offset the day before your call.
