The two CSTs: China Standard vs Central Standard

Taipei runs on China Standard Time (CST), which is UTC+8. Chicago runs on Central Standard Time (CST), which is UTC-6. When you see "CST" on a meeting invite, you cannot assume which one the sender meant. Always clarify with the UTC offset.

The raw difference between UTC+8 and UTC-6 is 14 hours. But Chicago observes daylight saving time. Taipei does not. That one-hour shift in Chicago creates the 13- or 14-hour gap.

Why Chicago changes its clocks but Taipei never does

Taipei stays on UTC+8 all year. It last tried DST in 1979 and abandoned it permanently. There is no spring-forward or fall-back on the Taipei side.

Chicago follows US DST. Clocks spring forward to UTC-5 (Central Daylight Time, CDT) on the second Sunday in March. They fall back to UTC-6 (CST) on the first Sunday in November. This means:

  • From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November: Chicago is on CDT (UTC-5). Difference with Taipei (UTC+8) is 13 hours. Chicago is 13 hours behind Taipei.
  • From the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March: Chicago is on CST (UTC-6). Difference with Taipei (UTC+8) is 14 hours. Chicago is 14 hours behind Taipei.

On 15 January 2026, Chicago is 14 hours behind Taipei. On 15 July 2026, Chicago is 13 hours behind Taipei. That one-hour swing changes what "morning" means for your call window.

When to call between Taipei and Chicago

The rule of thumb: Taipei morning equals Chicago previous evening. Taipei evening equals Chicago morning. You get two workable windows per day.

During Chicago DST (13-hour difference, mid-March to early November):

  • Book calls for Taipei 8:00 AM to reach Chicago at 7:00 PM the previous day. Use Taipei morning to catch Chicago's late afternoon.
  • Book calls for Taipei 8:00 PM to reach Chicago at 7:00 AM the same day. Use Taipei evening to catch Chicago's early morning.

Outside Chicago DST (14-hour difference, early November to mid-March):

  • Book calls for Taipei 8:00 AM to reach Chicago at 6:00 PM the previous day. Use Taipei morning to catch Chicago's late afternoon.
  • Book calls for Taipei 9:00 PM to reach Chicago at 7:00 AM the same day. Use Taipei evening to catch Chicago's early morning.

The best overlap for a standard 9-to-5 workday in both cities is narrow. Block meetings between Taipei 8:00 and 10:00 AM. That lines up with Chicago 6:00-9:00 PM in winter or 7:00-10:00 PM in summer. That is your primary window. The reverse window (Taipei evening, Chicago morning) works if both sides are flexible: block Taipei 9:00-11:00 PM to catch Chicago 7:00-9:00 AM.
